Web 2.0 Week 3 - RSS and Newsreaders

What is RSS?
Really simple syndication (a.k.a. rich site summary) is an XML-based web application used for sharing web content. This format is used on a website and then compiled and viewed with a feed reader (a.k.a feed aggregator). Instead of the end-user going out and viewing individual websites for any recent updates, the end-user subsribes to feeds from the various sites. The sites with feeds will then send updated information to the user's feed reader. This is a valuable time saver!

I would like to learn how to write code for use on my websites so that viewers can subscribe to my site and get updates in a timely fashion. I'm used to using WYSIWYGs for creating and updating my websites. I'm getting better at locating HTML that I can plug into those sites. So, my next step is to locate information on how to easily add the proper code and quickly update it.

  2. I really enjoyed reading your post. I think that you get the idea and you are able to explaining clearly.

I hope that you will be able to learn about the codes. Please share your findings with me later.

  3. I see RSS as a real time saver, but I haven't gotten into the habit of looking at my reader...so I miss the benefits of RSS. My goal is to change that and become a "reader" reader. I can see the benefits if I would just use it.

  5. Brandi- I missed last weeks session. Thank you for your explanation, it makes sense to me know. For the sake to retain the information in my mind and make sure I understood it correctly, let me know if this is what it means.
For example, if I am a soccer mom wanting to know the updates on scores, tournaments, etc I would hope that our coach or team would have an RSS rather then having them email me every day and take up space on my mail box?

  6. Feedburner looks like the quickest way to incorporate feeds into my own websites to the various audiences can get updates via RSS.

I think I'm going to be looking into this in-depth. I don't want to have to reverse engineer code if there's a service like FeedBurner out there. Plus, I just read that FeedBurner has been bought by Google. That has to be a great combination.
